The affected Droid X owners say that after updating, the phone goes to a black screen, and won’t reboot unless the battery is reset. Even then, most people still end up with a bricked phone. On the other hand, some users had a perfectly breezy OTA update and are enjoying the power of Android 2. 3 Gingerbread.
The worst cases, Droid X owners say that the update process eventually freezes up on them, and after power-cycling their phones, they now lock-up while booting. Others manage to boot into Gingerbread, but with the Droid's radio apparently non-functional. One mitigating factor may be what modifications to the smartphone were made prior to applying the update; we've heard of it happening to users who rooted their phones. There's likely more to it, as other users who claim to be running stock software have also found their smartphones disabled.
Verizon hasn't made a statement about these problems, and instead appears to be dealing with the issues of individual users as they come up. It's not clear yet just how widespread this problem is, and how many Droid X owners it's affecting, but given the number of reports we've seen, we'd expect Motorola or Verizon to make a move soon.
